His Light, Your Path

Guidelines for Speech

Believers should use their words with grace, wisdom, and self-control so that their speech honors God and encourages others.

The words we speak carry tremendous influence. They can encourage and strengthen others, or they can wound and discourage. Because of this, God has given believers clear instruction regarding their speech. Our words should reflect a heart that is walking with the Lord, showing grace, honesty, wisdom, and self-control. What fills the heart will eventually come out through the mouth, making it important for believers to guard both their thoughts and their speech.

Scripture teaches that wise communication is often marked by careful listening, thoughtful responses, and gentle words. Rather than speaking impulsively or excessively, believers should seek to use their words in ways that honor God and help others. Whether speaking with family, friends, coworkers, or strangers, every conversation presents an opportunity to demonstrate Christlike character through the way we communicate.
