Trials have a way of revealing what we truly believe about God. The disciples had just witnessed the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, yet when they found themselves struggling against the wind and waves, they responded with fear rather than faith. Instead of calling upon the Lord, they labored harder in their own strength. Through the storm, Jesus was teaching them a lesson they would need for the rest of their lives: the secret of spiritual power is not self-sufficiency, but complete dependence upon God.
Peter's decision to step out of the boat is one of the most remarkable demonstrations of faith in Scripture. While the other disciples remained in the safety of the ship, Peter desired to be where Jesus was. For a moment he experienced the impossible, walking on water at the command of Christ. Yet when he focused on the storm rather than the Savior, fear took hold and he began to sink. Even then, Jesus did not abandon him. He reached down, lifted Peter up, and continued teaching him the lessons of faith. God often works the same way in our lives, patiently growing our faith even when we stumble.
Too often we focus on the waves while forgetting the One who rules over them. The storms, difficulties, and uncertainties of life are real, but they are not greater than God. Faith grows when we learn to look beyond what we can see and trust the Lord who is working behind every circumstance. The greatest opportunities for spiritual growth often come when we step out in faith and discover that God is more than able to sustain us.
