Jude, a short but powerful book, urges us to contend for the faith and warns against apostasy—stepping away from God’s truth. Jude highlights three paths of woe through the stories of Cain, Balaam, and Korah:
- The Way of Cain: Cain’s problem was his worship. He wanted to serve God on his terms, which led to anger and the murder of his brother Abel. This story warns us against living the spiritual life our own way instead of God’s. Cain’s refusal to bring the proper sacrifice and his subsequent anger illustrates the dangers of self-will and disobedience.
- The Priority of Balaam: Balaam, a prophet, was tempted by greed. Despite knowing God’s will, he entertained offers to curse Israel for personal gain. His story teaches us the danger of prioritizing personal gain over God’s commands. Balaam’s journey, marked by his encounter with the angel and his talking donkey, highlights the peril of letting greed overshadow our commitment to God.
- The Gain-saying of Korah: Korah opposed Moses’ leadership, leading a rebellion against God’s appointed authority. His pride and desire for power resulted in a dramatic judgment from God. This warns us against pride and rebellion. Korah’s story, where the earth swallowed him and his followers, is a stark reminder of the consequences of challenging God’s chosen leaders.
These paths of woe show the consequences of straying from God’s way. We must avoid these pitfalls by living according to His word.
Psalm 119:105
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path.
Avoid the paths of woe by being in God’s word and living by it. God has so many blessings in store for us when we simply live life His way. Learn from the paths of woe and follow God’s guidance.
