In Genesis 34:1-2, we read about Dinah, the daughter of Leah and Jacob. Her curiosity led her to explore the land’s daughters, but this innocent action ended tragically when Shechem, the son of Hamor, took advantage of her.
Genesis 34:1–2
1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
This story highlights the dangers of prioritizing worldly experiences over godly guidance. In Romans 16:19, Paul reminds us to be wise about what is good and naïve about what is evil.
Romans 16:19
For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
The Bible offers valuable wisdom for our lives. Proverbs 4:7-9 stresses the importance of gaining wisdom and understanding, promising honor to those who pursue it. However, like Dinah, we often find ourselves drawn to the world, thinking it might hold something better for us. Unfortunately, this can lead to harmful consequences.
Proverbs 4:7–9
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: And with all thy getting get understanding.
8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: She shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: A crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
Paul’s message is clear: we should avoid curiosity that leads us into sin. We need to protect our hearts and minds from worldly temptations. By keeping our eyes focused on God, we can avoid the allure of sin. If we don’t seek out what the world offers, we won’t feel tempted to indulge.
Dinah’s experience teaches us to be content and trust in God’s plans. She would have been safer and happier by staying within the boundaries God set. Similarly, we must be careful about what we expose ourselves to—just like the children’s song reminds us to be cautious about what our eyes see.
Seek godly wisdom, be content with what God provides, and remain simple concerning evil.
